William Edward St, Longueville

Petersham Railway Station

Petersham Railway Station is Sydney’s largest and most elegant 19^th century railway station building. Built in the 1880s, it was the only major ‘First Class’ station building constructed in Sydney in the 19^th  century. Slate Roofing Australia restored the roof of the historic building with Welsh Penrhyn slate in 2016.

Barangaroo Pumping Station

Barangaroo Reserve is one of the world’s most significant waterfront renewal projects, transforming the once ugly working port and featureless concrete apron into a magnificent 6-hectare harbour park. Preserving and relocating historical features was a high priority to the site. Slate Roofing Australia was contracted to reroof the Barangaroo Pumping Station, a heritage-listed 1900s pumping station, with Welsh Penrhyn Slate in 2015.

Chatswood House

Constructed in 1888, Windsor Gardens is an excellent example of a high Victorian gentleman’s residence. Located in the semi-rural, outer suburbs of late 19^th century Sydney, the two-storey rendered brick house and four-storey tower must have been a spectacle at the time. Slate Roofing Australia worked on the roof restoration for the historic Chatswood house in 2016, replacing the existing slate roof with slates from the famous Del Carmen quarry.

Bishops House Maitland

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted to reroof the historic Bishops House and St Johns Church in 2016, replacing the existing slate roof with slates from both Del Carmen and Penrhyn.

St John’s and the Bishop’s House restored and refurbished as places of historical significance to the City of Maitland and the Catholics of the diocese. This project is a statement about the significance of the Catholic Church in the region.

Mowll Memorial Village: Lober House

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted for the historic Lober House terracotta shingle tile repair project. In this project, our slate roofing experts replaced the existing terracotta roof with terracotta shingle tiles from Koramic.

The Historic Lober House, in the Sydney suburb of Castle Hill, is a late Federation-style mansion and the grandest house of its period in the area. Built in 1926, it features several wings with complex hipped terracotta tile roofs and tall chimneys. Slate Roofing Australia replaced the existing roof with Belgium-made Koramic terracotta shingle tiles in 2015.

Slate Roofing Australia has been recognised by the Master Roof Tilers and Slaters Association for its outstanding work on this project, earning the award of Finalist – Best Roof Residential Project.

Lober House is an outstanding late Federation Arts and Crafts Style mansion, probably the grandest house of its period in the area with original interior features of note. Excellent quality design with distinctive terracotta tiled roof and tall chimneys.

Built for Robert Craig Dixson in 1925-6 on a holding of 117 acres. In 1958 Elwatan and six cottages on the property were sold by the Dixson family to the Anglican Retirement Villages. They are now part of the Mowll Memorial Village.

Tower House

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted to reroof the historic Tower House, replacing the existing terracotta roof with terracotta shingle tiles from Koramic.

Slate Roofing Australia has been recognised by the Master Roof Tilers and Slaters Association for its outstanding work on this project earning the following awards:

• Winner – 2017 Craftsman of the Year
• Winner – 2017 Best Commercial Project

Although considerably altered, this unusual late-Federation servant’s house retains its most significant feature – the complex hipped terracotta tiled roof and cylindrical water tower with bellcast copper roof. Slate Roofing Australia replaced the roof of historic Tower House with Belgium-made Koramic terracotta shingle tiles in 2016.

Badham Building Sydney University

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted for the Badham Building slate roof repair using the Welsh Penrhyn slate.

The Badham Building was built in 1888 and substantially remodelled in the mid-1920s. Additional storeys and a terracotta roof were added, with a boarded soffit and copper gutter. Slate Roofing Australia replaced the historic building’s roof with Welsh Penrhyn slate in 2014.

Heritage listed Badham Building at the University of Sydney Built in 1887-1888 North and west facades and tower are Professor Wilkinson’s interpretation of Italianate finished in creamy stucco. The Physics Laboratory was a single storey rendered masonry building with a slate roof. The building was substantially remodeled in the mid-1920’s by Leslie Wilkinson. The Italianate style tower of the original Physics Laboratory was retained. Additional storeys were added with the original cornice forming a string-course at first-floor sill height. A terracotta roof was added, with a boarded soffit and copper gutter. The Badham building, including the earlier sections, was finished in a cream stucco.

Bronte House

Historic Bronte House is a magnificent, mid-Victorian mansion and an outstanding example of a picturesque Gothic-style colonial residence. It retains rare features of its early architectural design, and is the oldest house in the Waverly local government area in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Since it was built in 1845, it has belonged to many owners, many of whom made piece-meal additions and alternations to the building, often insensitive to the original design.

By 1980, and then owned by Waverly Council since 1948, the house had fallen into disrepair. Thankfully, the council agreed on decisive action to see the property restored, without subjecting its ratepayers to the bill. They would lease the house for a peppercorn rent ($1/year) for 25 years to an individual or individuals willing to pay for the extensive repairs.

Restoration works began in 1980 but stopped in 1984. Arts organiser Leo Schofield assumed responsibility for the lease in 1994 and resumed extensive restoration of the house and garden between 1995-2002. Scofield’s restoration was in keeping with the original construction by Robert and Georgina Lowe (who bought the unfinished property from the colonial architect Mortimer Lewis for a song in 1843).

In 2014, Slate Roofing Australia, the preferred roofing contractor for many government institutions, was contracted to replace the roof of Bronte House with Welsh slate. At the time of the roof restoration, Welsh Penrhyn slate tiles were in short supply. To accomplish a superior finish required the expertise of SRA’s master slaters, who completed the roof using a delicate balance of both Penrhyn and Welsh Cwt-y-Bugail slate.

Highlights of Bronte House

• Original design by colonial architect Mortimer Lewis
• Construction began in 1838 which included laying the house foundations and cutting roads
• In 1842 Lewis was in financial difficulty and work on the house was brought to a halt
• In 1843 the unfinished house was bought by lawyer Robert Lowe who lived in it with this wife Georgina until returning to England in 1849
• Bronte House is set on the edge of Bronte Gully and is surrounded by magnificent gardens
• It is especially notable stylistically for its “mid-Victorian design reflecting a romantic interpretation of the medieval past”
• It boasts: circular and hexagonal corner turrets with cone-shaped roofs, deep bay windows and timber traceried verandahs
• Its high double slate roof was originally shingled
• Watercolour paintings and sketches of the gardens by Georgina Lowe are held in the State Library NSW

JD Stewart Building Sydney University

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted to reroof the historic J.D. Stewart Building with Welsh Penrhyn slate. JD Stewart Building slate roof repair

This Federation-style building retains many of its original features, including the sandstone piers to the entrance, the carving and lettering over the doorway, the brickwork with sandstone trim to windows, coping and crenelated parapet. The slate roof, which includes copper ridging and finials, was replaced in 2014 by Slate Roofing Australia with Welsh Penrhyn slate.

The building was built back in 1911 as the Veterinary Science Building and is still standing proudly and educating students as originally intended. The first purpose-built building for the newly established Veterinary Science, in continuous use for that purpose since 1912 and one of a diminishing number of buildings still used for its original purpose.

A two-storey Federation Arts and Crafts style building which retains many of its original features including the sandstone piers to the entrance, the carving and lettering (Veterinary Science) over the doorway, the brickwork with sandstone trim to windows, coping and crenellated parapet to the semicircular room over the entrance (formerly part of the library). Other features such as the main doors including the Art Nouveau style door, furniture, and small pane windows also survive. The roof is slate with copper ridging and finials.

Maitland Courthouse

Maitland Court House – AWARD

Slate Roofing Australia won the Master Builders Association 2014 Restoration of a Historical Building Award for the replacement and maintenance of Maitland Court House, NSW. We restored the roof of the historic building back to its former glory using Welsh Penrhyn slate. Renovations to the beautiful 1895 building began in 2013 and included replacing slate tiles, gutters, downpipes and flashings.

“The original slate tiles were regarded as ‘the best quality slate in the world’ and it is great that in this renovation we’ve been able to match these original slates with a new ‘Heather Blue’ slate, and replace the Colourbond section of the old roof with slate tiles,” said Robyn Parker, Member for Maitland.

Ultimo Pumping Station

Slate Roofing Australia was contracted to reroof the historic Ultimo Pumping Station slate roof. Slate Roofing Australia replaced the existing slate roof with Welsh slate from Penrhyn.

Designed in the Federation free style in 1901, this prominent industrial building was Sydney’s first electric sewage pumping station and is still in service today. The scale, colour, texture and location of this historical building give it considerable streetscape value. Slate Roofing Australia refurbished the roof of the heritage-listed pumping station with Welsh Penrhyn slate in 2016.

Historically it was part of an original network of twenty sewage pumping stations constructed in Sydney at the end of the 19th century. The station was a key component of this network, being the largest and controlling station for the performance of the other first generation stations.

Aesthetically it is an excellent example of a substantial and prominent industrial building designed in the Federation Free style which due to its scale, colour, texture, and location have considerable streetscape value.

In its surviving fabric SP0001 provides evidence of technical excellence in traditional construction techniques and craftsmanship, such as the stone dressings around the entrance openings. It has educational potential in revealing the development of sewage pumping engineering works and architectural taste in a period when utilitarian buildings were given as much careful attention as public buildings. It is also technically significant for its continual use as a low-level sewage pumping station as originally designed and constructed, albeit with mechanical and electrical upgrading.

Coogee Church

St Brigid’s Parish Coogee Slate Roof Installation

Cogee’s St Brigid’s Parish slate roof installation used the Penrhyn Heather Blue slate from Welsh Slate.

Built in an impressive Byzantine style in 1923, St Brigid’s Parish Church features a remarkable tower and beautiful marble alter. It was added to the National Trust Register in 1987. In 2016, Slate Roofing Australia restored the roof of the historic church, replacing the existing slate roof with Welsh Penrhyn Heather Blue slates. Our team of master slaters ensured the original ceiling was not compromised during the reroofing project and the church remained fully operational throughout the restoration.

Particular items of significance include the face brickwork and cement render, stained glass internal plaster work and polished timber joinery. The brickwork, in particular, was a bold design statement by the original architect and is unique in Sydney.

The roof contained asbestos which required removal. An asbestos contractor was engaged to work alongside SRA with air monitors on the ground to ensure surrounding areas did not get contaminated while keeping the building weather proof. The Slate Roofing Australia team ensured the original hung ceiling was not compromised and that the church remained fully operational during the reroofing project.

Maitland Church

St. John’s Church or Maitland Church was opened in Maitland 1846. To mark 150 years, the church and bishop’s house were refurbished as part of a wider project to restore buildings with historical significance to the City of Maitland and the Catholics diocese. Slate Roofing Australia replaced the existing slate roofs of the two buildings with Del Carmen slate on the bishop’s house and Welsh Penrhyn slate on the Church in 2016.
